It’s Pancake Tuesday!  Are you ready to eat pancakes until you can eat no more?

In Britain eating pancakes originates from the Christian event of feasting on Shrove Tuesday (Shrove originates Shrive meaning absolution) when much perishable food would be eaten up before Ash Wednesday the first day of Lent.  In other cultures it is known as Mardi gras – or Fat Tuesday – and often a very grand carnival takes place.  In both instances it’s seen as the last day of gorging on rich and fatty foods before Lent, the period up to Easter.   Here we see village children enjoying making pancakes and then racing up the bank to win a much desired chocolate prize.

Pancakes are easy and fun to make, but the event gets much more lively with the competition of tossing them – hopefully landing in the pan and not on the floor.  But the best part has to be in eating them.

There is such a great variety of pancakes, from those that resemble the thin French crepe to slightly heavier Scotch pancakes or Drop Scones.  Sweet or savoury, they prove to be a favourite for breakfast, lunch or supper across the globe.

Easy Peasy Lemon Squeezy Pancakes

Here’s a simple recipe; 100g plain flour, 2 large eggs and 300ml milk. Butter for frying.

  • Put the flour, eggs and milk into a bowl and whisk to a smooth batter.
  • Place a medium frying pan over a medium heat and melt a small knob of butter, when sizzling drop a half ladle of pancake mixture into the pan and cook for approximately 1 minute on each side
  • We love these served with freshly squeezed lemon and sugar, but of course there are loads of options.
  • For sweet pancakes add 2 tablespoons of sugar to the initial mix!

If the above is too daunting…buy a Pancake Mix!…no need to tell anyone.
